Discover How Your Nissan Intelligent Key® Works in Lafayette, LA

Your new 2022 Nissan has so much to offer — plenty of style, performance capabilities, safety features and, of course, technology. Most new Nissan models come equipped with an Intelligent Key®, a high-tech multi-purpose key fob that can accomplish a myriad of tasks. You already know that you can start and stop your Nissan model's engine remotely, but did you know that you can also roll down the front-seat windows, honk and silence the horn, turn on the exterior lights and even access your Driver's Memory System (when equipped)? You sure can.

Your Nissan model's Intelligent Key® is one smart device, but what do you do when a warning light appears? And what do those warning lights even mean? The team here at Giles Nissan Lafayette knows, and we can help you figure those warnings out without having to consult your owner's manual or call a toll-free number. You may even have more questions about how your Nissan Intelligent Key® operates, such as what should you do when the key stops working, or how many keys can you have for your Nissan in total? Below you'll find our answers to your questions!

Nissan Intelligent Key® Warnings and Indicators

Key Battery Low

This indicator appears when the Intelligent Key® battery is running out of power. If this indicator appears, replace the battery with a new one!

Key ID Incorrect

This warning appears when the ignition switch is placed from the OFF position and the Intelligent Key® is not recognized by the system. You cannot start the engine with an unregistered key.

Key System Error

After the ignition switch is placed in the ON position, this warning appears for a period of time and then turns off. The Key System Error message warns of a malfunction with the Intelligent Key® system. If the warning appears while the engine is stopped, it may be impossible to start the engine. If the warning appears while the engine is running, you can drive the vehicle. However, in these cases, have the system checked by one of our technicians.

No Key Detected

This warning appears when the Intelligent Key® is left outside the vehicle with the ignition switch in the ON position. Make sure the Intelligent Key® is inside the vehicle.

What Do I Do When My Nissan Intelligent Key® Won't Work?

If the battery of the Nissan Intelligent Key® is discharged or environment conditions interfere with the Intelligent Key® operation, start the engine according to the following procedure:

  1. Place the shift lever in the P (Park) position.
  2. Firmly apply the foot brake
  3. Touch the ignition switch with the Intelligent Key®. A chime will sound, and when the ignition switch is pushed without depressing the brake pedal, the ignition switch position will change to the ON position.
  4. Push the ignition switch while depressing the brake pedal within 10 seconds after the chime sounds. The engine will start.

Replace the battery in your Nissan Intelligent Key® as soon as possible!

How Many Nissan Intelligent Keys® Can I Have for My Nissan?

As many as four Intelligent Keys® can be registered and used with one vehicle. The new keys must be registered prior to use with the Intelligent Key® system and Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System of your vehicle. We recommend visiting our dealership for this service! Since the registration process requires erasing all memory in the Intelligent Key® components when registering new keys, be sure to take all Intelligent Keys® that you have to our dealership.

A key number plate is supplied with your keys. Record the key number and keep it in a safe place (such as your wallet), not in the vehicle. If you lose your keys, give our dealership a visit for duplicates by using the key number. Nissan (and our dealership) does not record key numbers so it is very important to keep track of your key number plate.

A key number is only necessary when you have lost all keys and do not have one to duplicate from. If you still have a key, it can be duplicated without knowing the key number.
